055: Gareth Jones: There’s Gotta Be A Better Way

Self-described “people and technology nut,” Gareth Jones discusses tech startups, re-thinking work, and the importance of attracting the right money (and not just any money).

We also discuss Ricardo Semler’s book “Maverick” and creating effective work cultures that support people being at their best.

After you listen, let me know your most important takeaway or a-ha moment from this conversation. Email me at or tweet to @brocedwards and let me know.

Gareth Jones, Commercial Leader, CEO, Writer, and Speaker in HR and Recruitment Technology

In his words:

HR professional, consultant, recruiter, marketer, techy and wannabe futurologist. In the dog world I’d be referred to as a ‘Bitzer’ – Bitz of this, and bitz of that. The first 10 years of my career were text book HR – from gritty ER stuff in a closed shop union environment to the slick end of International HR in a global consumer goods business. A great, if not a little thankless, existence.

The next 10 years were less than text book. I left HR following a bout of chronic disillusionment and dabbled in Executive Search for a short while. I remember being horrified at how backward it was and just as I was developing a plan to change the world of Search, the internet and web 1.0 hit me full in the face.

I crammed a lot into the next few years… Startups, starbucks, VC’s, IPO’s, CRM, technology, propositions, powerpoint, strategy, tactics, branding, people, successes, failures, confidence, insecurity, riches, losses, wife and kids.

Since 2017, I have been CEO at Headstart AI and also founded People Ventures, a value added investment fund providing early stage seed investment exclusively for people technology startups.

This episode is sponsored by NutriFitt. I tried NutriFitt’s whey protein supplement after meeting the founder and hearing his journey and commitment to quality. I like to support up and coming businesses so I gave it a try and was impressed. It mixes immediately and the chocolate flavor actually tastes like chocolate, not like some chemical engineering committee’s overdone attempt. It has no artificial sweeteners, colors, or preservatives. Plus, it includes probiotics and is easy on the stomach.

The true taste test? My teenage daughter even likes it.
There are a lot of supplement brands on the market and NutriFitt is my favorite. Because you’re awesome and a listener of Imperfect Action you save 15% on every order. Just use the code TAKEACTION (one word, ALL CAPS) at checkout.

(My personal favorite: Double chocolate whey protein.)
